Travel to New Orleans for Mardi Gras

by Katie Hammel on February 8, 2011   |    Posted in: Travel Guide    |    No Comments

This year, Mardi Gras in New Orleans falls on March 8, so there’s still plenty of time to plan a trip to one of the biggest and most decadent celebrations. Though “fat Tuesday” was traditionally a day to have one last indulgence before making sacrifices for Lent, Mardi Gras in New Orleans is now a week-long celebration that features, music, dance, elaborate parade floats, tons of alcohol, and a whole lot of debauchery. It’s the ultimate city-wide party, and one that can be very expensive to enjoy. But there are a few ways to cut the costs of your Mardi Gras experience.

First, be on the hunt for Mardi Gras travel deals. It can be hard to find a cheap hotel in New Orleans at Mardi Gras time. Many places add a hefty surcharge during these dates, and others book up far in advance. But,  the ones that do still have availability will be looking to fill those empty rooms and may be more willing to cut a deal or throw in some perks to the package. As for flights to New Orleans, the key is flexibility. Check out budget airlines, search within a range of days, and consider flying into a nearby airport, which may be cheaper (though you’ll need to weigh the cost of your time and the added expense of transport from that airport to the city).

The good news is that once you’ve arrived, you can enjoy Mardi Gras on a very small budget. The parades and entertainment are free (as are many of the city’s other main draws, like the gorgeous Garden District and the historic cemeteries) and others don’t cost much to enjoy. When all else fails, just grab a po-boy sandwich for a few dollars and take a seat for some prime people watching.

And if you’re heart isn’t set on being there for Mardi Gras, consider visiting New Orleans in the week right before or after. Demand is a bit lower (as are prices) but you’ll still find a festive atmosphere.
