Most of us certainly don’t need to be fans of either MTV’s The Hills or The City to know that New York and Los Angeles have long been the two major cultural centers in the U.S. In fact, long before Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port had their lives filmed and put out on the airwaves, there have been hoards of business and entertainment people who have traveled between the two coasts. Hell, there have even been plenty of regular folks who have flown between the two coasts.

Well, for those of you that do go from New York to L.A. on a regular basis, there is some pretty fantastic news for y’all. According to a story published on the LA Times today, a transcontinental fare war has erupted out of LAX, where Jet Blue started offering $105 one-way fares from Boston and New York. In response to these lower than ever fares, Virgin announced slashed fare prices between New York and Los Angeles as well. What does this mean for the transcontinental traveler? Not only will you be able to fly between New York and L.A. round-trip with taxes and fees for just $231, but you’ll also be enjoying the lowest prices seen in decades during high-demand summer travel times. In times when all economic news seems to be about doom and gloom, travelers are happy to see airfares continuing to drop.
