It is certainly no secret at this point that in light of economic woes, the travel industry is hurting and therefore offering up some pretty fantastic deals. Whether you are looking for vacation packages, hotels or just flights, it doesn’t take a whole lot of effort these days to find some pretty amazing prices on travel. That being said, my jaw about hit the floor when I saw Cheapoair advertising New York to London airfares starting at $99 round-trip. No, your eyes are deceiving you and I didn’t make a typo. That’s $99 for your ticket there AND back. Only 100 bucks to hop across the Pond? It must be too good to be true.

I decided I would do a little investigating into the matter to see if these phenomenal prices were real or some of kind of travel myth—really low advertised prices that are impossible to actually score. I did a search for flights and found that, yes, indeed, these $99 round-trip fares did exist, BUT you do have to watch out for those pesky taxes and fees. Because it’s an international flight (and probably because $99 round-trip New York to London is a little too good to be true) the taxes and fees added up to an astounding $366.59, making the REAL ticket price closer to $500 round-trip. That being said, this is still not a bad price for airfare to Europe, so it could still be worth checking out.
